Capturing the many views available to homeowners in the Grand Valley is what Heinemann does best, although his skill is not always appreciated. An architectural control committee once turned down plans he'd made for a home in a high-end subdivision because he offended them by “turning a non-view into a view lot.”
“So many building sites here have a particular view,” Heinemann says. “If you pick a plan out of a book, it just doesn't work. Every lot has pluses and minuses.” Because every lot offers its own unique challenges and opportunities, a site visit to the homeowners property is one of the first steps Heinemann tales when designing a home.
Secondly, “I've got to know the budget before I design the house,” Heinemann says. “Ilike to keep an open communicative relationship with my client. We are building the proper house, for the
Every home owner has specific needs and wants, whether or not Frank Lloyd Wright anticipated them. Terri wanted to include a spacious mini suite that would be a welcome place for her mother to live, when and if she reached the point where she couldn't live on her own. The suite has a handicap-accessible bathroom with a roll-in shower, a mini-kitchen, and an extra-large closet that's large enough for chest of drawers so her mom could have more space to include a couch or TV in the room itself.
Buzz Binder had a few requirements of his own. He's a gourmet chef and wanted the large island with no stove, no sink, and no gadgets, just a large work space where he could spread out ingredients, chop and cook. He also wanted a circular driveway with plenty of room to maneuver his boat and garage big enough to hold that boat.
Terri's desire for windows to capture the views from every room is a classic Frank Lloyd Wright element. Windows are everywhere at the Binder's home, along every side of the house, in the hallway, even in the closets. Some capture the Monument, some capture the Grand Valley, and some look out into the courtyard, which offers a cool and shady outdoor living area when the patio along the western side of the house overheats with the afternoon summer sun.
